Anti-slip bowls are great as majority of them are shallow and made from stainless steel or ceramic
which
makes them easy to clean.
They can be placed on any type of flooring and stops your cat from pushing them around while trying to
eat. Always make sure you use a clean bowl for each meal.
Auto Feeders
Auto feeders are a nice to have and not a necessity for senior cats. They are great for setting
routines
and helping your cat stick to their diet if they are on a strict routine and medication.
They keep your cats food fresh and locked so your cat cannot break in for extra meals. You can normally
set multiple timers and some dispensers are designed for households with multiple cats. Always check the
feeder supports the size of your dry food before purchasing.
We have had the same auto feeder for years with no issues. Depending on your budget newer dispensers
have
Wi-Fi and cameras built in to suit your lifestyle.
There are wet food auto feeders on the market but we only have experience with dry food dispensers.
Raised Bowls
There has always been a big debate whether raised bowls are better for cats. All cats have their own
personalities so you might find one thing that may not work for another.
We do however recommend making sure your cat's bowls are wide enough and not too deep for their size.
Your
senior cat will have good days and bad days when trying to eat.
If they have arthritis or sore joints and depending on what medication or supplements they are taking,
you
will find some days they want to stand and others sit to eat.
We recommend buying raised bowls that allow you to take the bowl out of the stand. This allows you to
cater for their needs and swap out bowls between meals.
Always make sure you use a clean bowl for each meal.
Silicone Mats
These are not a necessity but definitely help to keep your cats area clean and tidy. Especially if they
are messy eaters and drinkers.
Mats can be found in all shapes, sizes and colours so you can find one that suits your cat or their
feeding area. Easy to wipe over and some are dishwasher friendly.
Water Fountains
This is a product that we talked about for years but never committed to buying. Since purchasing one,
Colin prefers it over other bowls of water. We still recommend having other bowls of water around the
house as senior cats will struggle getting around and might prefer a closer bowl.
Water fountains come in all shapes and sizes. If your cat has epilepsy we recommend finding one that
trickles and not shoots water up as this can cause a seizure. Some spouts can be removed. Cats prefer
cold
running water and this is a great purchase to keep them happy.
